Holy Week

Des de 06.04.23 fins a 10.04.23

Alcúdia remembers with fervour the Passion during the Holy Week, which normally takes place in March or April. Celebrations start on Domingo de Ramos (Palm Sunday) with the Procesión del Silencio, leaving the Església Parroquial de la Mare de Déu del Carme i Sant Pere and winding through Port d'Alcudia's main streets.

On Holy Thursday and Good Friday the main processions are held and the brotherhoods go round the old town carrying religious floats and sculptures. In Alcúdia there are four cofradíes (brotherhoods); Sant Pere, la Mare de Déu de la Llum, la Mare de Déu de la Victòria and the Sant Crist whose penitents carry along their religious floats.

In Mallorca the godfather pays an important roll. On Holy Thursday godfathers give their godsons a rotllo (a round sponge cake with coloured and sugared almonds).

All drama vanishes on Easter Sunday. This day the procession named L'Encontre celebrates the meeting between Christ and his mother in which the Virgin gives three little jumps of happiness at seeing her son resurrected.

On the following Tuesday, the second Easter festivity, a Pancaritat is held at the Ermita de La Victòria. Alcudiencs get together to worship the Virgin and then they eat the delicious panades which are leftovers from Easter.

On the Diumenge de l'Àngel another Pancaritat is held at the Cova de Sant Martí with music by Coral Ciutat d'Alcúdia.
